Olive You Frequently Asked Questions
This should more appropriately be called a list of most likely questions.
- How do I read OliveYou in my language?
Would you like to translate OliveYou into your language or correct errors? Just submit feedback providing your credentials and the language you would like to translate to.
- I got an email asking for help to transfer money and offering me a percentage.
This is a known, popular, yet persistent scam. Please read the following for more information:

- The interests that I selected aren't showing up in the list.
Only the most popular 10% of interests are listed. When enough people choose the
same interests as you, it will be listed.
- Why are there separate fields for gender and orientation?
Research has shown gender and orientation are distinctly different. One can
be male, and have any number of orientations. The 'likes androgynes' orientation
is not technically a recognized orientation, but was included for completeness.
Likewise, the 'androgyne' gender is not an offical gender classification, but
was included for those few individuals who don't identify as either male or
female. Asexual means someone who has no sexual inclinations. One can be asexual,
yet still prefer the company of a specific gender. Asexual is not the
same as celibate. A celibate person may still have sexual feelings, but chooses
not to act on them. The autosexual orientation exists, but was not included.
Someone who is autosexual is only attracted to themselves; not a
useful category for a personals site! Some researchers also suggest that pedophilia
or bestiality is an orientation! These are also not useful here.
Along with many orientations, there are many physical sexes as well.
There are too many conditions to list all forms
such as MRKH syndrome, AIS, Turner's syndrome, Klinefelter's syndrome, intersexed, etc.,
most of which people have never heard of. Genetic testing was banned from the Olympics
because of the high incidence of women with AIS (XY chromosomes)! Generic
gender categories should suffice for the vast majority of people.
- How safe is my email address
Your email will never be use for spam by OliveYou or sold to third parties.
Obviously it is visible to the public, but to prevent the harvesting
of addresses in bulk by spammers, it is encoded as an image with a security background
which hinders OCR (optical character recognition) software. Furthermore, access
to the email images are limited to 5 per minute per IP address. Still, hackers
can potentially break into the system. However, it would take more effort and
they are usually more concerned with credit card numbers or vandalism.

What are Myers-Briggs personality types?
Myers-Briggs is a descriptive personality model. Characteristics of personality
are observed, and people are categorized accordingly. The four categories are
how much you like to be around people (introversion/extroverion), how you process
information (intuitive/sensing), how you make decisions (thinking/feeling), and
how you structure your life (perceiving/judging). In each category, there is
a dichotomy, I/E, N/S, T/F, and P/J. A person is categorized based on how they
act most of the time. Of course there are exceptions and people do cross the
line, either through will or nature. Surprisingly, these four categories combined
can tell a lot about a person, and predict behaviors, careers, interests, etc.
- How does Myers-Briggs personality types relate to compatibility?
There is much research on this, but the results are sometimes inconclusive
and contradictory. There aren't obvious matches either. Usually
other factors play a more important role, such as religion, wealth, race, etc.
Also, two conflicting types may still develop a relationship through hard work
and dedication. For example, the hallmark of a xxxJ is punctuality. When paired
with a xxxP, there are bound to be fights over "Who's late?" and "Who cares?".
Through recognizing those differences and accepting them, those people can still
develop a relationship. Having the same type can virtually garauntee chemistry
at first. People with the same type tend to have similar interests. For example,
ESxJ tend to be civil minded, while xNTx tend to like science fiction. But even
with similar interests, those people might have irreconcilable differences, such
as religion or habits. Try the following combinations, and explore what type
of people you seem to get along with best. These four groups of
people may seem to get along with other types in the same group the best:
ENTP ISFP ESFJ INTJ, ENFJ ISTJ ESTP INFP, ESFP INTP ENTJ ISFJ, ESTJ INFJ ENFP ISTP.
Find your type and then search for people with the 4 types in your group, including
your own.
- Where can I find more information about Myers-Briggs?
There are actually more accurate personality models, but none are as popular
or practical as the MBTI because the MBTI has only four letters rather than a bunch
of numbers.
- Where did the name Olive You come from?
A dear close friend of the owner once wrote a note saying "olive you". It took
a while for the meaning to get across. It is a homonym for
"I love you". The person who wrote the note was the type who has a hard time
expressing their feelings (INTJ).

What is biorhythm compatibility? What are biorhythms?
Biorhythms are cycles which start when we are born. There are 3 important cycles:
physical (23 days), emotional (28 days), and mental (33 days). The cycles follow
a sine wave. Theory states that one is strong and capable on physical peaks, secure
and happy on emotional peaks, and alert and keen on mental peaks. On the troughs,
one could be more susceptible to disease, clumsy, needy, depressed, foggy, or less
aware. Biorhythm compatibility is determined by finding out how closely two people's
cycles are in synch. A percentage is determined for all three cycles, then averaged.
It is assumed that if two people experience the same highs and lows at the same
time, they have a better chance of forming a stronger relationship.
[Technical] The phase difference between two cycles is turned into a percentage
by multiplying the
two equations for the cycle, then finding the maximum value with derivatives.
A general equation can be developed by finding the day which yields the maximum
value in terms of the phase difference, replacing that expression back into the
original equations which are multiplied together, and simplifying. The result is
(1 + cos (2*pi*d/p))/2 where d is the phase difference in days and p is
the period of the cycle. The same equation can be developed by taking one cycle's
area over half the period divided by the other (using integrals).
